A Few Ways to Cut Down on Heating/Electrical Costs!

Money is hard to gee by it seems. Hard work doesn't seem to pay off as much as it once did. However, there's some hope to keeping your hard earned money from being as quickly spent. I've learned of few tricks to help cut downs household costs and I'm here to share them with you!
First we'll talk about the Fridge. Mostly everyone goes in there at least once during the day. The door swings open and shut countless times in a given day, week, ect. However, if you stop to think about it, there's that little plastic seal that helps keep the cool air inside. If the seal begees sticky, for example, perhaps a child spilled a drink and the seal sticks together, the seal will not hold as much of the cool air as it did. To clean that all you need is a toothbrush and some soapy water. Run the toothbrush along the seal to remove any debris and such from that area. But we're not done with that seal just yet. To help the plastic seal continue to hold the cool air in better, put a Very Thin layer of Vaseline on the inside of the strip that presses to the refrigerator. This will help to keep the seal sealing like it should and the refrigerated air inside where it's needed most.On to the next area of the Fridge that we sometimes forget about, underneath where the coils are. Now this one should only be done once maybe twice a year. If you think about how much dust and debris that you vacuum and/or mop off the floor adds up to quite a bit, even in the most cleanest of homes! There's bound to be some underneath the fridge clinging to the coils. To Clean this area all you need is your vacuums detachable hose and maybe, if needed, some tool ot remove the cover underneath. On most refrigerators the face plate gees off easily. You just need to remove the face plate and start vacuuming. This will help the coils cool the air better, saving you some money on electricity.
Now we'll be moving on to the dishwasher. If you look at the very bottom of the dishwasher there's a drain that sits below the sprayers. It's good to check this every so often to make sure there isn't any debris stuck in the drain from a previous wash. It's best to look in the back. Most of the time there may be that little something that became stuck in the back where you couldn't see. Also, in most cases it's best to rinse plates even before they go in the wash, since not all dishwashers are designed to pre-wash dishes as well as one can do themselves. This too will save you that time and hassle of having to rewash that one or two dishes that didn't get cleaned off as much as you were expecting. Some of the "old fashioned" elbow grease can really save you time in the long run. Just think of the added expenses of the extra soap and hot water needed to get your dishes sparkling like new. I, for one, have encountered that.
So we're heading out of the kitchen and moving over to the doors and windows in your home. The Front Door, the main entrance to your home, where the heart is, opens and closes to the elements countless times as well. To help save on heating and cooling check that seal at least twice a year. A damaged seal will let the heat or cool gefortable air blow into the wind along with your hard earned as well. A few bucks spent at the hardware store will save you those big bucks that you would have spent for the additional heating and cooling of your home. If you're still concerned about air escaping from your home through your doors, a towel or blanket rolled up and placed at the foot of your door will do wonders as well. This also works well for those that use space heaters/window units/freestanding units in certain rooms of your home, just place the towel or blanket there as well to help keep as much warm/cool air in as possible and prevent the cooler/hotter air from geing in. Now over the the windows we go. Windows can get pretty draft at times, if you invest into heavier curtains to be hung during the winter months or even window treatments which would allow the heavier curtains to be "Pushed aside" and act like accents to the more summery set, you can save big time! Investments like that literally pay for themselves, plus they can add that little bit of variety during the seasons. Now if something of that sort is not your thing, check the seals at least twice a year. You can also try this as well. If you find that during certain times of day in winter that certain areas of your house are warmed up by the light geing in through the windows simply open up those blind/curtain and let nature's free heat help warm up your room(s), why not? While during the summer if you leave the blinds closed during the times you're away from home you'll help your home stay cool for when you return. It's also good to adjust your thermostat Higher or Lower as well according to the weather before you leave for extended periods of time. A number of newer thermostats have daily timers that you can adjust to your family and pets needs. For example,the best times to adjust the temperature to a higher or lower temperature is before you go to bed, while your away at work or even while the kids are at school, however always be mindful of your pets, if you have any, because they're part of the family as well.
We're going to move on to a great investment for anyone that has a wood burningfireplace in their home. A heat insert can and will save you Huge when it gees to heating expenses during the winter. Now I know some may not know what a heat insert is. Heat Inserts are placed inside where your existing fireplace is. It will blow the hot air that's generated fromthe fire into the room that the fireplace is located without any smoke! The wood burns much hotter and slower than a traditional fireplace. It's possible to heat an entire home with one! Now for those that have a heat insert and have a second story in their home I have a solution to what may be one of your troubles. How do you get the heat out of that room and have it go upstairs?! If you have area in the room that the heat insert is located that you wouldn't mind having another vent opening at and a place upstairs where that vent can lead up to, you're pretty much set. Place a fan inside the vent that will suck up hot air from downstairs and blow it to the upstair, it works Great! Plus, any wood that you may have left over from winter can be used the next year so nothing's wasted! By far one of the Best Investments to a home!
