Sebastopol Geese

Buying hatching eggs on okay is always a risk, but the buyer can do some things to at least increase his chances to buy eggs from nice, healthy stock. First of all, do your homework. Do you have your incubator ready and the temperature steady? Do you know what breed of geese you want for sure? They are not all the same! Sebastopol Geese are easy to maintain, they are gentle and medium sized. They make terrific parents and will adopt other goslings as well as taking good care of their own.
Okay, so you have decided on buying Sebastopol Geese. How do you know which ones to choose? There is a lot of talk about "smooth breasted" vs. "curly breasted", exotic colors, etc. Most people naturally want the really curly Sebs, but when you read ads that say, "We have all curly Sebastopols" you need to keep shopping. Curly Sebastopols bred with Curly Sebastopols gives you a gosling with angel wing and other problems that you do not want. A breeder needs an assortment of both. Colored Sebastopols are great if they have had proper breeding. I read an ad on okay where the guy just crossed a Seb with whatever he had in his barnyard and called it colored. Keep looking. Colored Sebs take years to develop and were primarily introduced by Holderread's. Which brings up another issue. Most ads claim their birds came from Holderread's. If the ad can't even gee close to spelling the name of the place, keep looking.
The next big issue with any breed is to make sure they have pictures of thier own birds! I cant tell you how many times I have seen pictures on ads taken from Murray McMurray's or Holderread's Waterfowl and the seller claims they are their own. It would really stink to spend all that money on expensive eggs, hatch them and find out you hatched a mutt! Do your research! Finally, the seller should answer your questions and help you through the process of hatching.
Everyone has failures, don't get discouraged. Just try again.Once you get going it is a little addictive! I hope this was informative and helpful for you.
