Gibson Electric Guitar Serial Number and Date Code Info

Serial numbers show approximate date of manufacture. For all dates, you will need to look at the construction technique and geponents used to get a more precise date of manufacture. See my note at the bottom of the page for some 1953 and earlier models that do not have a serial number. There is still a way to date them.

note: The 1952 and 53 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top had no serial numbers. On many of these and other Les Paul's lacking serial numbers you can read the code numbers on the volume and tone potentiometers, their on the sides of the cases. The codes will tell the year and mount of manufacture, since 1952 model had no serial# and no RHYTHM/TREBLE plastic switch plate on the front on the guitar. Also the capacitors should be wax coated GT452 Grey Tigers in red writing. I hope this helps all of you out there. Please vote on my guide!
